Remember: Our Children Are Watching Us!
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Your actions speak so loudly I can’t hear your words.”
Your children might as well be saying the same thing. Kids pick up on everything you do and why wouldn’t they, you’re their very glimpse into the world where they’re growing up, their example.
Have you ever met a child that you soon discovered would be a living hell to babysit? As much as it would be nice or easier to label the child with some sort impairment, the reality is, its probably the parents fault. You are in control of your children, not the other way around.
“Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.” Proverbs 13:24
The famous verse has surfaced. Many associate this verse with spanking which isn’t at all what it specifically refers to. Its about disciplining your children so they know how to live successfully. I don’t agree or disagree with spanking, every situation has its necessary disciplines, use your discretion and be confident in your decisions.
Know this, breathe it, live it: When you discipline your child or children, they will INEVITABLY respect you. There is no question about it. Check this out.
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)
Do NOT feel guilt when you punish you kids for behaving badly, they want you to feel guilt so they get what they want. Ask yourself:
SINCE WHEN IS IT GOOD TO GET EVERYTHING WE WANT?
Lets ask some statistics to broaden our perspective.
According to niddk.nih.gov more than TWO THIRDS of adults are considered to be overweight or obese! What is obesity? Don’t think too hard about it, obesity is literally eating too much. Do you see where I’m going with this? We want too much food and get upset when we gain too much weight. Not only is this alarming for adults, kids pick up on the same habits naturally!
I believe the best thing we can do for ourselves is to learn each and every day. An education is worthless without application so don’t think for a second I’m referring to sending your children to a good college. Einstein said “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” Aspire to learn all the time and your children will follow suit.
One of the most common themes in the bible is seeking wisdom, and what is wisdom? Wisdom is what we’re speaking of right now. Have the humility to learn from every source even if it’s what-not-to-do.
Be happy to discipline your children (don’t do it “just because”) because God says He only disciplines the ones He loves. Check it out:
“Because the Lord disciplines the ones He loves, and He chastens everyone He accepts as His child.” (Hebrews 12:6)
